The regulation CE n. 761/2001 disciplines the formality of the voluntary adhesions of the organisations to the eco-management and audit scheme(EMAS).For the part relating to the environmental organisation, EMAS follows the regulation ISO 14001.
Compared to the regulation ISO 14001, the EMAS regulations in particular foresee:
1. An environmental statement; a document describing their environmental policy ,environmental impacts, management programme and performance. ( available to anyone on request at reception.)
2. An independent control of the environmental management system, by an independent assessor to check that the organisation is managing all its environmental impacts well.
Both these practices are directed towards improvement; starting from the various policies and the objectives to reach, therefore taking actions to reduce and adapt the various operations, after which follows the numerous controls to see the achieved results, this starts a chain of continual development and improvements with continual challenges.
ISO and EMAS, what is the difference?
The two procedures have similar standards, whereas the ISO has a value known on an International level, EMAS is a protocol established at a community level, careful of the interaction of the subjects of the certificate and their territories. Therefore, the analysis of this context must be thorough and finalised, the objectives of environmental policies, with their related actions must pay special attention to this context.
Keeping registered within EMAS at community level, guarantees better management of the certification system and also a clear interpretation of the aspects of the certificate. EMAS initially started on a European scale but is now rapidly expanding into the International market, because of its credibility and also its severity in respecting the asked for requirements.
